Distressed Hospital ER in North Carolina

The Challenge

A hospital in North Carolina was faced with significant clinical operation concerns in their emergency department. Patient wait times were long, public opinion of the hospital was poor, and many patients left the emergency department without ever being seen. The hospital ranked lowest in its health system for throughput. Morale was low. As the front-door to the hospital, the hospital president and health system recognized the importance the ER would play in turning around public perception and improving patient outcomes. That’s where we came in.

The Solutions

Our clinical operations team met with hospital leadership to fully understand the problems facing the department. From there, we met with key stakeholders inside and outside the department, including community leaders who interfaced with the department. We analyzed important data and identified core process improvement and implementation teams to help transform the department. Along the way, we tracked improvement and iterated when necessary.

the Results

  • Leads the system in turnaround time

  • Dramatic reduction in number of patients left without being seen

  • Improved door-to-provider times

  • Top 10% of all emergency departments nationwide in throughput
